Environmental Monitoring Technician

We have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Monitoring Technician to join our Environmental Research team based in Hamilton. We’re looking for a self-starter who can use their initiative and ingenuity to find practical solutions out in the field. This is a rare opportunity to enter a career working hands-on in the outdoors, as well as spending time in the office helping to turn your hard work into meaningful results!

This role will see you undertaking environmental monitoring, data collection and management, as well as other work related to groundwater and surface water investigations, research and monitoring. This includes:

  • Providing technical input into the planning of environmental monitoring programmes as part of our technical team
  • Installing, maintaining and calibrating field instruments and sensors
  • Collecting field data, quality assurance, and management.

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • A commitment to consistently aim for excellence in environmental monitoring
  • Experience identifying issues and developing practical solutions, preferably in a field-based environment
  • Experience in environmental monitoring and/or electronics (advantageous, but not essential)
  • A keen interest in a career in agricultural and environmental field research
  • Intermediate-level computing skills.

Grow your career

We have an exciting opportunity in our New Materials Group for a Production Technician to join us on a full-time, fixed-term basis until the end of March 2023. Working with a close knit group of 10 scientists and engineers you will contribute to a substantial research project developing new uses for crossbred wool. The project is commercially focused and of significant importance to the New Zealand primary sector.


This role will see you:

  • Operating pilot scale manufacturing equipment under both routine and experimental conditions related to wet chemical processing and drying;
  • Producing batches of novel wool-based materials to support market engagement activities of this commercial stage project, supervised by our scientists and engineers;
  • Assisting with the production of prototype equipment in our mechanical workshop.


This is a great opportunity to be involved in a very varied and practical hands-on role at the early stage of a new technology. Although the majority of work will be during normal working hours some flexibility around outside normal office hours is required.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in a production environment, including mechanical aptitude to, commissioning, and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Capability in working in a physically demanding environment handling heavy equipment and chemicals.
  • A 'can-do' attitude with hands-on problem-solving abilities, and sound attention to detail.

Research Manager, New Materials

Our team

Having established a strong and commercially focused New Materials research group to underpin transformational change in the New Zealand wool sector, we’re now seeking to expand our activities consistent with the global consumer shift to use more sustainable materials through biopolymer-focused innovation. To support this change we’re searching for an experienced biopolymer specialist to join us as a Research Manager. You’ll identify new project opportunities and assist in the management and delivery of currently funded projects on cellulose and other natural materials.

Your deep understanding of global trends in applied biopolymer materials will be coupled with proven skills in identifying and converting unmet market needs into funded projects in the biological materials area and securing and managing multi-year, multi-party research projects.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A relevant postgraduate qualification in chemistry, engineering, materials science or other scientific discipline.
  • A track record of working with biopolymer materials and an understanding of the state of the art in the biopolymer sector.
  • Proven experience in writing and winning government grants and commercial contracts.
  • Experience in research project management and product development.
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills along with experience leading teams

Research Assistant, Precision Agriculture

At LAL, our Precision Agriculture (PAg) group are leading the way in enabling efficient agricultural and horticultural production systems by establishing ourselves as a trusted provider of technologies and advice. We’re searching for a Research Assistant to join us on a casual basis to support a key project based in the Te Puke area.

This role will see you:

  • filming various labour tasks being carried out on orchards
  • managing film files to ensure data integrity
  • recording time details of on-orchard activities from recorded film.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • a relevant tertiary qualification (desirable)
  • experience using a GoPro camera (desirable)
  • current driver’s licence
  • own vehicle for transportation to and from orchards.

IRRICAD™ is the essential design package used for designing all types of pressurised irrigation systems from concept through to completion. Today IRRICAD™ is distributed globally and is sold to over 90 countries across multiple continents. 

We’re looking for a skilled and passionate Sales Engineer to join our team as we grow our IRRICAD™ client-base and sales globally. Bringing your proven relationship management skills, you’ll play a crucial role in taking potential customers on the journey of discovering what IRRICAD™ can do for their business, and securing our clientele into the future.

 This role will see you:

  • Finding new IRRICAD™ customers globally, including responding to queries and providing demonstrations to aid sales;
  • Selling the benefits of annual upgrades of the software to existing users;
  • Utilising and maintaining our client relationship management system;
  • Producing promotional material for customers in collaboration with the wider IRRICAD™ team;
  • Providing back-up support for IRRICAD™ users and international distributors, including training where required;
  • Working with the support and development teams to identify new features for future development and the resolution of errors.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Have proven experience in a similar role, ideally as an IRRICAD™ user, in irrigation design or the irrigation industry;
  • Have technical sales experience and use of CAD systems (advantageous);
  • Have a 'can-do' attitude with hands-on problem-solving abilities, and be comfortable working in a dynamic environment;
  • Be personable and able to interact with a range of people, including potential customers from varying backgrounds.

Some international travel may be required.
